Using NHS Services In Winter Posted or Updated on 26 Jan 2024

Using NHS services wisely over the winter, can help you get the right treatment, in the right place, at the right time – first time.

Think NHS 111 first

  • The 111 service is available 24/7 either online – 111.nhs.uk – or via your phone.
  • The team will do their best to answer your call as quickly as possible though it may take a little longer due to the current demand. Please be patient and kind when you get speak to an advisor.

If you are visiting Dorset and need to seek help from a general practice, please contact your existing practice

  • Contact your own general practice for support or advice on your ongoing or minor health issues. Visit your practice website to find out their opening hours and services.

Get prepared and use your local pharmacy

  • Ensure you have any repeat medications and if you need them, please allow a couple of extra days for preparation.
  • Use your nearest pharmacy for minor ailments such as headaches, aches and pains.
  • Local supermarkets often have own brand medicines to stock up your medicine cabinet at cheaper prices

Use digital services

  • Make use of online electronic services such as Klinik or eConsult when contacting your general practice - its often quicker and frees up the phone lines for those at need it to telephone in.
  • The Digital Health App Library recommends apps that help with a wide range of health conditions – orcha.co.uk.
  • Healthier Together provides advice for parents.

COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses are still circulating, so stay at home if you’re feeling unwell and avoid contact with other people.

Only ever call 999 in a medical emergency

  • This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

If you have friends, relatives and loved ones who are currently residing in hospital but are ready to leave, help both them and the NHS by assisting them with their return home. This is best for patients and helps free up beds for those who may be in greater need. For more information visit www.dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/home-first.
